What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are titanium posts that replace tooth roots and provide secure support to dental restorations like crowns, bridges, or dentures. Implants are typically placed through the gums and into the jawbone by an oral surgeon. After surgery, the biocompatible titanium fuses with the bone in a process known as osseointegration. Because implants become embedded in the bone, they are just as strong as your natural tooth roots. Due to their many advantages, dental implants are considered to be modern dentistry's best solution for missing teeth.

Missing a Tooth? Here's How an Implant-Supported Crown Works
Dental Implants Address Jawbone Atrophy
Normally, your jawbone receives stimulation through the act of chewing, which helps preserve its structure and strength. Following tooth loss, the bone is no longer stimulated by the tooth roots, and vital nutrients are rerouted to other parts of the body. As a result, the bone begins to deteriorate. This can cause changes to your facial structure, including puckered lips and a sunken appearance, as well as more widespread tooth loss.
Traditional bridges or dentures do nothing to address this problem. Dental implants, however, offer the same stimulation to the bone as the roots of natural teeth. With implants, you can maintain your natural bite strength and jawline shape.

Dental Implant Treatment Timeline
Step 1: Consultation
Schedule a consultation with Dr. Pohl in Fort Walton Beach, FL, so he can review your candidacy for implants, examine your teeth and gums, and plan for any preparatory procedures you may require. If you and the dentist agree that the best path forward for your dental health is implant dentistry, we can coordinate your treatment with a local specialist.
Step 2: Dental Implant Surgery
Implant surgery can be performed with local anesthesia or while you are under more powerful sedation. The oral surgeon will begin the procedure by making a small incision in your gums at each location where you will receive an implant. Then, he or she will place a titanium post through each incision and into the jawbone. Finally, the incisions are closed with sutures.
Step 3: First Healing Period
After the titanium implants are in place, a healing period of three to six months is required for osseointegration to take place. As the implant fuses with the jawbone, you may be provided with a temporary dental restoration.
Step 4: Abutment Placement
Once your implant has fused with your jawbone, you will return to the office of your implant specialist so he or she can attach an abutment to the implant. The abutment is a small metal piece that connects the dental implant to your crown, bridge, or denture.
Step 5: Second Healing Period
A second healing period of a few weeks is required for your gums to heal around your abutment.
Step 6: Restoration
Once your jawbone and gums are fully recovered, you can return to our office serving Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and Pensacola to receive your custom restoration. For patients with a single missing tooth, we can create stunning dental crowns that closely mirror the aesthetics of your natural teeth. If most or all of your teeth are missing, we can provide implant-supported dentures. Your custom restoration is connected to the abutment and secured directly to the implant for maximum stability.
Anxious About Treatment? Sedation options can make treatment a breeze

Implants & Full Mouth Reconstructions A Healthy Foundation for Your New Smile
