Dental Crowns

Damaged or decayed teeth can be embarrassing, painful, and make eating and speaking difficult.  Dental crowns restore the strength and function of compromised teeth so you can eat and speak with confidence. Dr. Douglas Pohl in Fort Walton Beach, FL, can place a dental crown to protect your natural tooth and restore your oral health.

A Closer Look at Dental Crowns

Your tooth will be reshaped to make room for the custom crown to be placed over and then secured with dental cement.

Dental Crowns Are Versatile Solutions To Numerous Dental Problems

Dr. Pohl frequently uses dental crowns as a part of other dental procedures, including:

Root Canal Therapy

Dental crowns are often the final step in root canal therapy. Root canal therapy removes infected pulp within a tooth, eliminating the need for extraction. A dental crown protects the remaining tooth structure and restores the natural tooth shape.

Dental Bridges

If you are missing a tooth, dental crowns can be used to support a dental bridge and restore your bite. The crowns are attached to nearby healthy teeth with the prosthetic tooth suspended between them to fill the gap. Dr. Pohl uses high-quality IPS Empress® and e.max® to create bridges that are both natural-looking and durable.

Dental Implants

If you have a missing tooth, an implant-supported crown can restore your smile and bite. Dental implants are titanium posts that act as prosthetic tooth roots, an important part of every tooth that prevents jawbone atrophy by stimulating the creation of new bone. To complete the treatment, Dr. Pohl creates a natural-looking dental crown that attaches to the implant and restores your tooth, from crown to root.

Dental Crown Process

If you are anxious about dental visits or find it difficult to sit through an appointment, we offer sedation so you can rest comfortably during treatment.

Initial Consultation

An initial consultation is performed so our dentist can examine your mouth and determine if a crown is the best course of treatment. Following this examination, Dr. Pohl will craft a custom treatment plan to address your dental issues.

Preparatory Treatments

If you need treatments like a root canal or dental implants, this is performed first to remove the infection or place the implant. Dental implants will require healing time so that the jawbone can fuse to the implant in a process called osseointegration.

Tooth Preparation

Damaged and decayed portions of the tooth are removed, and the natural tooth is reshaped to allow the crown to fit properly.

Impressions

Dr. Pohl uses digital impressions at his Fort Walton Beach, FL, practice. This eliminates the need for messy putty impressions. Our precision impressions allow our lab to craft a dental crown that fits, functions, and looks like your natural tooth.

Temporary Crown Placement

While your permanent crown is being crafted, our dentist will place a temporary crown to ensure your comfort. These temporary crowns are made in-office within about 10 minutes. Like the permanent crown, the temporary crown is made to match the shade of your natural teeth. Often patients choose to undergo teeth whitening to brighten their smile and then have their crown designed to match.

Permanent Crown Placement

Our trusted lab takes care to hand-finish your crown to Dr. Pohl's exact dimensions, a process that typically takes two weeks. You will then return so Dr. Pohl can test fit the crown to ensure it is comfortable. Once both of you are satisfied with the crown, Dr. Pohl will secure it in place.

The Dental Crown Procedure

The existing tooth is reshaped so a porcelain crown fits over the remaining tooth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does dental crown treatment hurt?

Your dentist will numb the area using a local anesthetic to ensure you do not feel any pain during treatment. If you need further comfort measures or if you have dental anxiety, our Fort Walton Beach, FL, dentistry practice offers both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation to help you feel more comfortable during treatment.

What are dental crowns made of?

Our Fort Walton Beach, FL, dentistry practice prefers to use high-quality IPS e.max® and Empress to make dental crowns.  While traditional porcelain crowns are durable and natural-looking, IPS e.max ceramic crowns have been clinically shown to address discoloration, fractures, and more, with long-lasting durability and lifelike results.

If my tooth is damaged or decayed, why not just pull it?

Even a single missing tooth can cause jawbone atrophy. A gap in your smile also allows other teeth to move out of alignment, which can create new dental problems. And while a dental implant could overcome those issues, it's a more expensive solution. However, a dental crown can address decay and also strengthen the tooth. Unfortunately, if the damage or decay is too severe, extraction and a dental implant-supported crown may be the best option.
