Sedation Options for a
Calmer Experience

Dental implant treatment doesn’t have to be stressful. We offer two safe sedation options to help patients feel calm and comfortable throughout care:
- Nitrous oxide: Quick-acting and wears off fast, so you can drive afterward
- Oral conscious sedation: A stronger effect and often chosen for longer procedures like implant placement
Sedation can help to:
- Ease dental anxiety or phobia
- Reduce gag reflex and restlessness
- Make longer treatments feel shorter
With sedation, patients can relax knowing their treatment is comfortable, efficient, and worry-free.
Preparing for Dental Implants
If you don’t immediately qualify for dental implants, Dr. Pohl can often provide the care you need right here in our Fort Walton Beach office. Common preparatory treatments include:
Tooth Extractions
When a tooth is too damaged to save, Dr. Pohl can gently remove it to create space for a dental implant. While he does not perform same-day extraction and placement, he can prepare the site so that an implant can be placed after proper healing.
Fillings & Root Canals
Before you can proceed with implant placement, we'll need to ensure all of your remaining teeth are strong and healthy. If we find any areas of decay or infection, we might first recommend dental fillings, root canal therapy, or other procedures.
Periodontal Treatment
Healthy gums are essential for implant success. Dr. Pohl provides cleanings, exams, and treatment for conditions like periodontal disease to ensure your mouth is in the best possible condition before moving forward with implant surgery.
When Bone Grafts or Sinus Lifts Are Needed
Some patients do not have enough healthy bone tissue to support a dental implant right away. In these cases, additional procedures may be recommended to create a stronger foundation for long-term success. While Dr. Pohl does not perform these surgeries himself, he helps patients connect with trusted specialists whose offices are easily accessible from Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and Pensacola, ensuring the process is smooth and well-coordinated.
Bone Grafts
When teeth have been missing for some time, the jawbone can shrink or weaken. A bone graft rebuilds density in these areas by placing grafting material where support is needed most. After several months of healing, the bone becomes strong enough to hold a dental implant securely. This extra step helps patients achieve lasting stability and prevents further bone loss in the jaw.
Sinus Lifts
For implants placed in the upper back jaw, the sinus cavity may leave too little bone height for support. A sinus lift gently repositions the sinus membrane and adds bone tissue beneath it, creating the space needed to place implants safely. This procedure makes dental implants possible for patients who might otherwise be limited to traditional dentures.

I have a HUGE fear of any dental work. Visiting Dr. Pohl’s office felt welcoming and everyone was very helpful in answering my questions. I have anxiety in general but they were able to provide me with Nitrous during my filling and have these exotic birds you can watch ☺️ Having no insurance at the time, they were able to help me with payments. The nurses and staff are so nice! I will be back!

Step 1: Consultation
Schedule a consultation with Dr. Pohl in Fort Walton Beach, FL, so he can review your candidacy for implants, examine your teeth and gums, and plan for any preparatory procedures you may require. If you and the dentist agree that the best path forward for your dental health is implant dentistry, we can coordinate your treatment with a local specialist.
Step 2: Dental Implant Surgery
Implant surgery can be performed with local anesthesia or while you are under more powerful sedation. The oral surgeon will begin the procedure by making a small incision in your gums at each location where you will receive an implant. Then, he or she will place a titanium post through each incision and into the jawbone. Finally, the incisions are closed with sutures.
Step 3: First Healing Period
After the titanium implants are in place, a healing period of three to six months is required for osseointegration to take place. As the implant fuses with the jawbone, you may be provided with a temporary dental restoration.
Step 4: Abutment Placement
Once your implant has fused with your jawbone, you will return to the office of your implant specialist so he or she can attach an abutment to the implant. The abutment is a small metal piece that connects the dental implant to your crown, bridge, or denture.
Step 5: Second Healing Period
A second healing period of a few weeks is required for your gums to heal around your abutment.
Step 6: Restoration
Once your jawbone and gums are fully recovered, you can return to our office serving Fort Walton Beach, Destin, and Pensacola to receive your custom restoration. For patients with a single missing tooth, we can create stunning dental crowns that closely mirror the aesthetics of your natural teeth. If most or all of your teeth are missing, we can provide implant-supported dentures. Your custom restoration is connected to the abutment and secured directly to the implant for maximum stability.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants
Do dental implants require special care?
No. Dental implants can be cared for just like natural teeth with daily brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits. The healthier your gums and surrounding teeth, the longer your implant is likely to last.
Will my dental implants look natural?
Yes. Dr. Pohl partners with experienced lab ceramists who craft crowns, bridges, and dentures designed to match the color, shape, and shine of your natural teeth. The result is a restoration that blends seamlessly with your smile.
What happens if I delay getting dental implants?
Waiting too long after tooth loss can cause the jawbone to weaken, which may make implant placement more complex later. Early treatment can help preserve your bone structure and prevent shifting of nearby teeth.
